William C. Goudy Technology Academy History

Goudy Technology Academy is more than just a building standing in the heart of the Edgewater/Uptown neighborhood; it represents the struggles, obstacles, and triumphs this community has overcome over the past 50 years.

In 1988, struggling with oversized classrooms and lack of funding, Goudy was declared, “the worst school in America” by then Secretary of Education William Bennett. Through countless efforts made by staff, state officials, students, and community members, Goudy has redeemed itself and is on its way to becoming one of the best schools in America!

The facility received a new wing in 2005 that included a computer lab, state of the art science lab, library/media center, lunch room, and several classrooms. Thanks to 48th Ward Alderman Mary Ann Smith, the concrete lot in front of the school has been transformed into a beautiful, well lit Campus Park complete with playground equipment, Astroturf field, and running track. With the implementation of the Office of Academic Enhancement’s Technology Magnet Cluster Program, Goudy established a commitment to using 21st century tools to advance learning. The addition of a new media lab, laptop cart, student response systems and over 25 interactive whiteboards has allowed students to enhance their learning via the internet and an array of engaging, interactive software programs.

Goudy School was named after the well known lawyer and first president of the Chicago Bar Association, William C. Goudy. This connection has allowed Goudy School to build a strong and lasting relationship with the Chicago Bar Association. Volunteers from the CBA participate in a yearly Lawyers in the Classroom program to help prepare the seventh grade students for the United States Constitution Test they take in June.

Each year Goudy continues to grow academically and we are proud to achieve the highest school rating, Level 1+! Although it is one of the most diverse Chicago public schools, with over 40 different languages spoken by our students, we are all “Goudy Cougars” and strive to make each new day one of learning and respect. The average daily attendance rate of 96% proves that the students really enjoy coming to school; Goudy truly is a great place to learn!
