June 3, 2017 - This past Saturday, Chinese Mutual Aid Association sponsored their 1st Annual Dim Sum & Then Some 5K. There were over 400 walkers and runners on this day. Swarms of runners descended upon one of Chicago’s most ethnically diverse neighborhoods-Uptown. Renowned for its historical theaters, unique music scene, and Asian influence, participants enjoyed a fun route that not only highlights the neighborhood but also Chicago’s scenic lakefront path. There were about 20 Goudy students & teachers past and present who partook in the 5K.
On Friday, May 12th Goudy hosted it's first annual Career Fair event for our 8th grade students. There were 34 professionals who graciously volunteered their time to help expose our 8th grade students to the many different career options available to them after high school. We had volunteers in many different fields such as a firefighter, a doula, 2 Googlers, a funeral director, a pharmaceutical sales rep, a sign language interpreter, a dentist, a chef, a physical therapist, a lawyer, a professor, and our very own 48th Ward Alderman, Harry Osterman! Thank you again to all of the volunteers in helping to broaden the horizons of our students!
On April 18, 2017 Goudy held its annual STEM Night. With the generous help and support of our staff and volunteers from Northwestern University and Loyola University, the Goudy community celebrated a night of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The night was filled with various STEM related hands on activities for parents and students to participate in...thank you all for attending this event!
Earlier in March, nineteen budding Goudy artists had the wonderful opportunity to participate in an arts program sponsored by the Admiral at the Lake Retirement Community. The students were able to create their own original paintings and receive guidance from a professional artist. Their paintings are currently displayed in the art gallery of the Admiral at the Lake. Back in December, CPS Computer Science for All and the Office of Leadership & Learning in partnership with Digital Youth Network created Code 60+ challenge, a 5-week learning challenge to bring Computer Science education to life. The challenge was to give students, parents, and teachers an opportunity to go beyond the hour of code by learning coding and computer science through digital challenges. Over the 5-week challenge, Goudy students coded over 800 hours and placed fifth in the city in number of hours coded. One of the winners from the Code60+ challenge was Nicholas L. in 8th grade who won a Chromebook in recognition of his accomplishments!
A year ago, when 48th Ward Alderman Harry Osterman visited our then 3rd graders at Goudy, he made them a promise that he will bring them to City Hall for a tour. On Wednesday, December 14th, Harry Osterman made good on that promise and invited our now 4th Graders to Chicago City Hall! Students were able to view the City Council Meeting, received a tour of City Hall, and participated in an intimate Q& A session with the Alderman. A HUGE THANK YOU to Harry Osterman for sponsoring this unique field trip!
On November 17th, Goudy's Fifth graders attended Convergence, an art exhibit at Mana Contemporary Art Gallery. The exhibit featured artwork from Goudy students as well as over 20 other Chicago Public Schools who were part of CAPE (Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education).
When these students were in 4th grade, they worked with artist Margy Stover to create floating and sinking sculptures in Engineering Lab. They were excited to see their sculptures exhibited in a professional art space, and enjoyed exploring the work of other artists as well.
On November 10th Goudy had our 3rd annual Health and Wellness Fair. Hundreds of Goudy students and family members poured into our school to attend 12 different breakout sessions focused on health topics such as exercise, hygiene and healthy eating. At the conclusion of our event the students were energized for their annual visit from Staley, the Chicago Bears mascot who presented 4 downs to a healthy lifestyle.
Goudy says thank you for all who attended and cant wait to see you at next years event!
On October 27th, Goudy took part in the G.O.A.L initiative (Get out and Learn). This is a program ran by the Chicago Blackhawks with the purpose of introducing hockey to the students of Chicago. Not only did the Chicago Blackhawks Training staff come to our school and teach an hour long class to our students, they also donated 2 hockey goals, 40 hockey sticks, hockey balls, Chicago Blackhawks pennies and goalie equipment
Goudy says thank you to the Chicago Blackhawks!
